Where we’re Going…

…and where we went!

Further below is the “plan” we started with; here’s what we actually ended up doing:

  1. Palau (1 week)
  2. Kosrae, Micronesia (1 week)
  3. Tokyo – Shinjuku (2 weeks)
  4. Mongolia (6 weeks)
  5. Japan – Rail Pass (3 weeks)
  6. Nepal – Annapurna, Everest (2 months)
  7. Dubai & Abu Dhabi (1 week)
  8. Oman (3 weeks)
  9. Northern Thailand (1 month)
  10. Vietnam (1 month)
  11. Cambodia (3 weeks)
  12. Southern Thailand (2 weeks)
  13. Malaysia (3 weeks)
  14. Singapore (4 days)
  15. Indonesia – Lombok, Flores, Raja Ampat (1 month)
  16. Australia (1 month)
  17. Qatar (23 hours!)
  18. Namibia (3 weeks)
  19. Zimbabwe (2 weeks)
  20. Zambia (1 night)
  21. Rwanda (2 weeks)
  22. Egypt (3 weeks)

I guess the lesson here is that we can only see six months into the future at best.  Our original Plan:

We have more of an outline than an itinerary.  The goal is to book as little as possible in advance, maintain maximum flexibility, and travel by surface when possible.  So if you have a “must see” place that’s not on my list, let us know below!  We’d like to move slowly, but it turns out that the world is big and a year is surprisingly short.

First Leg: Flying around

  • Palau (July 4-10)
  • Kosrae, Micronesia (July 11-19)
  • Tokyo and environs (July 20-31)
  • Mongolia (July 31 – Sept 10)
  • Japan (Sept 10-30)
  • Nepal (Oct 1 – Early Nov)
  • Oman and UAE (Early Nov)

Second Leg: Trains, boats and buses

  • Thailand
  • Cambodia
  • Vietnam
  • Malaysia
  • Singapore
  • Indonesia (Java, Bali, Sumatra)
  • Australia

Third Leg: Southern and Sub Saharan Africa

  • Namibia
  • Botswana
  • Mozambique
  • South Africa
  • Tanzania

Fourth Leg: How long do we have left?  And what’s stable?

  • Senegal
  • Tunisia
  • Egypt
  • Turkey
  • Greece
  • Croatia
